FAQ: DMV Release of Liability Form

  • A release of liability with the DMV is an essential document to release the owner of a vehicle from any responsibilities when they sell the car. This document notifies the local DMV that the vehicle has a new owner who’ll be responsible for any fines, taxes, and registration renewal after the selling date provided on the document. You can use a DMV release of liability form sample to ensure you include all the required information when filing your form.

  • Once you’ve filed a DMV release of liability printable form with your local DMV, you should receive a confirmation informing you that the database has been updated. However, sometimes you won’t get the confirmation. In that case, you can check the status of the vehicle record with your DMV. The DMV won’t process an NRL if any of the vehicle particulars (such as the VIN) is wrong, so you might need to refile your NRL if this is the case.

  • If you don’t issue a release of liability to the DMV, the vehicle will still be seen as registered in your name. This means that any fines, charges for violations, and even tax and registration renewal notices will be sent to you even if the car has a new owner. Some states might even fine you for not issuing this document.
